The business was founded in 1859 by a Tailor, James Shaw
Walker, in Fleetwood, Lancashire. The shop originally
sold Mr. Walker's work to the local ladies and gentlemen,
but soon expanded to stock a wider range of gentlemen's
outfits. In 1889 his two sons joined the firm and the
name was changed to J.S. Walker and Sons. The business
continued to prosper and remained in the family through
three generations; the last of the Walker line being
Douglas and Arthur, who were great grand-children of
the founder.

ln May 1964 Les Farquhar joined the firm. Les was born in
Scotland and moved to Fleetwood as a boy in 1939. His father
was a skipper fishing out of Fleetwood at the time. As neither
Douglas nor Arthur had sons to follow them, the control and
ownership of the business were gradually transferred to Les,
who was joined in 1975, by his son Paul.
Walkers remains a family business today, with Les, Paul and
a highly experienced staff of Michael, Norma, Tara, Cilla
and Ken, who excel in providing quality garments and quality
service to the people of Lancashire. Nowadays the latest technology
has enable us to bring you old fashioned service and high
standard products to everybody in the UK and beyond. Latest
sales figures suggest that half our business is done through
the Internet and half through the shop itself.
The success of menswear.co.uk has been built upon the success
of the past and will continue to do so. In 1995 BT awarded
the company first prize in its competition, run jointly
with the Sunday Mail, for displaying a combination of
traditional old-fashioned service, backed up with an
array of modern telecommunications equipment. This exciting
time was marked by coverage in National Papers, inclusion
in BT Television Commercials and extensive coverage
in BT magazines.
